‘Ma Po Tofu’ – Hot and Spicy 麻婆豆腐

The weather here (England) is getting colder and colder, wetter and wetter……….boring and miserable! 😦

The weather forecast said it will be more rain coming next week, oh dear! I just worry about the most risk flooding area won’t affect a lot! And I only can do : pray!

Want something to tickle my taste bug, want something to challenge how much I can cope with:  the hot and spicy food!

Usually, I won’t put too much chilli in my cooking, because I can’t cope with too much hot and spicy food, but this time, I want to beat the boring weather, hehe, watch me!

Ma Po Tofu – Hot and Spicy  麻婆豆腐

Ma Po Tofu – Hot and Spicy  麻婆豆腐

  1. Fresh silken tofu                                      200g (about 1/2 block, diced into 1cm cube)
  2. Vegetarian minced quorn                          2 tbsp
  3. Frozen mixed vegetable                            1 cup  (more or less)
  4. Yellow bean paste  磨豉醬                        1 tbsp
  5. Hot chilli bean sauce   辣豆瓣醬                1/2 tbsp
  6. 1 tsp cornflour mix with 2 tsp of water for thickening

  • Boil 2 cups of water in a saucepan, toss the tofu cube into the hot water for 1 minute, drain and set aside.
  • Heat a wok with 1/2 tbsp of oil, add the mixed vegetables and minced quorn, stir for 2 minutes and add the yellow bean paste and hot chilli bean sauce, mix thoroughly, add a little bit of water, cover the lid for about 1 minute.
  • Add the cooked tofu into the vegetable mixture, toss around for few second , then add the thickening mixture, slightly stir it to keep the cubed tofu’s shape. Off heat.
  • Did you found out that I didn’t put salt for seasoning? Actually I did it purposely without it , cause  two of the sauces are quite salty, but if you test it, you can feel free to add salt for your personal taste.

  • You can increase the quantity of the hot chilli bean sauce, if you can cope it!
  • If you feel your mouth burning after eating the spicy food, try to drink some milk. that’s the Japanese’s advise. But I tried to put a big dallop of cold yogurt or ice-cream inside my mouth – not to swallow it, keep for about a minute, that will help as well.
