Steamed Pumpkin Buns for Baby ~ Vegan 南瓜花花饅頭

This is the third time I make steamed buns also the second time for the roses buns. Steamed buns are one of the main breakfast in an Asian family. One hot steamed buns with a cup of hot soy milk are the typical breakfast in Taiwan and Hong Kong. People like to grab this takeaway and eat it on the way to work.

Today’s recipe is suitable for a baby over one year old. Suppose they do not allow any sugar or salt for their delicate diet before one, right? I forgot about this rule ages ago. 🙂

The sugar in this recipe, I like to use the raw and unrefined brown sugar. That is up to your choice if you like to use white sugar. But I recommend the brown sugar more than the pure white sugar for healthier.

This steamed bun is soft and a little bit of chewy, it can train your baby start to learn to chew small food. My little princess loves it so much.

Steamed Pumpkin Buns for Baby ~ Vegan 南瓜花花饅頭

Ingredient: 

  • 125g Plain flour/All purpose flour
  • 30g Pumpkin puree
  • 10 – 12g Raw sugar
  • 2g Active dried yeast
  • 45g Nut milk of your choice
  • 6g Grapeseed oil

Method: 

  1. Mix the yeast with sugar. Warm the nut milk and add into the yeast mixture, stir. Set aside until foamy.
  2. Sieve the flour in the stand mixer or in a large mixing bowl if you like to knead the dough by hands.
  3. Add the pumpkin puree in the flour and along with the yeast mixture. Start with a medium speed of the mixer first. Then gradually increase the speed after the mixture form a dough like (roughly). Add oil and let the machine work until the dough smooth and elastic.
  4. Place in a bowl greased with oil spray. Cover with a piece of cling film and place in a warm place to proof until double the size.
  5. Punch down the dough to deflate the air out. Divide the dough into a certain equal portion. Each portion divides into 4 or 5 small portions. Roll into a ball, cover with a piece of cling film and rest the dough for around 10 minutes.
  6. Roll each small portion into a round circle. Overlap half of each circle, repeat three or four layers. Start from the end of the circle to roll up. It will form a tube-like sausage. Cut into the middle, stand up with the cut side and form two little roses. Pull each petal slightly down to shape it more like roses.
  7. Preheat the steamer with lots of water to lukewarm temperature then off heat.
  8. Put each rose in a steamer with a piece of baking parchment underneath. Repeat the rest of roses.
  9. Cover the steamer with a lid and let the roses proof for the second time about 15 minutes.
  10. Turn on the heat and cook for around 15 minutes. Off heat and leave it for 3 minutes with the lid on. Then remove the lid, and serve!

Note: 

  • If you don’t want your baby to take any sugar yet, you can skip the sugar in this recipe.
