Vegan Black Sesame Rolls II ~ 黑芝麻卷

Have you tried this before? Definitely, not many people remember it now. It is one of the traditional dim sums. If you like Chinese dim sums, do remember to save this recipe. It will disappear soon or later.

This is my second time to make this roll. Tune back to the first version was a long time ago, back to 2012. Wow, five years ago since.

The first recipe that I made was a bit thicker. Not easy to roll up but the taste was good though. The thinner the better! If anyone likes to try later, remember this little hint.

According to Chinese herbal doctor said about black food is good for our health, black colour food like black beans, cloud ear fungus/ wood ear fungus, dried shiitake mushroom, black sesame seeds, black rice, black mission figs, black grapes and black garlic. They are especial good for our liver, kidney. These black foods have a variety of health effects such as free radicals, antioxidant, hypolipidemic, anti-tumor, beauty and they have antioxidant properties.

Ok back to our main topic now! To make this sesame rolls, you need to get everything well prepared. A grinder to grind the seeds into powder. Next is a blender, to blender everything into a smooth batter. BUT, if you’re lucky, I mean you own a high power blender like Vitamix. You won’t have any problem like me. One is enough to do all the work. Because Vitamix can grind the seeds very fine as well. So, I need to prepare a grinder, a blender again cause my dream haven’t come yet! 😦 Another tool to prepare is a shallow tray to fit into your steam, better use a stainless steel. My little tray is about 13cm x 19cm. A scraper must necessary to help you make the roll perfectly, I use my dough scraper.

Vegan Black Sesame Rolls II ~ 黑芝麻卷

Ingredient:

  • 100g Black Sesame seeds washed & drained
  • 100g Raw Brown Sugar
  • 100g Rice flour
  • 30g Water-chestnut starch
  • 400g Water

Method: 

  1. Drained the water from black sesame seeds. Fry the seeds in a dry frying pan without any oil until the aroma come out. Off heat.
  2. Transfer the seeds to a coffee grinder. Grind until a fine powder.
  3. In another mixing bowl, add sugar, rice flour, water chestnut starch. Add the water and stir until the starch dissolved without any lumps.
  4. Add the ground black sesame seeds in the batter, mix well. Transfer to a blender, blend until smooth.
  5. Prepare a steamer with hot water, grease a shallow heatproof tray. Pour a thin layer of the batter on the tray.
  6. Steam for around 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from the steamer, cool down a minute. Roll up from the short side to form a film roll like. Then serve!

Note: 

  • Blend the water chestnut starch with other ingredients and water. Keep stirring until the starch all dissolve with water without any lumps. This is an important step. Make sure it is no lumps.
  • Only a small amount/ a thin layer of the batter on the tray. It will let you roll up easily.
