Fried Tofu with Japanese Style Sauce ~ 日式和風醬煎豆腐

I am going to fulfill my words today. Remember I did the homemade tofu a few post before. I said I will make something with it. Now is the promise here to show you all.

The tofu here that I use is the firm one, not the silken soft one. It is easier for frying to avoid squash it. Only two main ingredients for this dish: tofu and Japanese nori. But the Japanese sauce 日式和風醬 has 13 different items altogether. Sounds crazy and incredible! I used 11 of them instead of the total 13! Because I skip the onion and garlic as my usual reason. But all the ingredients are so common, I think most of them you already have in your cupboard! So don’t get too much scared.

OK, let’s start! First, you can cut the tofu into stick shape. And cut the nori into thin strips enough to wrap around the tofu, like the picture I show you. Then the following step is going to mix all the sauce ingredients together. Fry the tofu sticks in a hot wok or frying pan until all sides golden, pour half of the sauce in and let the tofu nearly absorbs most of the liquid. Remove the tofu on a serving plate, then pour the rest of the sauce in and turn the heat high to cook the sauce until thicken and reduce to half quantity. Off heat, pour over the tofu. That’s it! Easy, the job was done. Serve straight away when it is still hot.

Fried Tofu with Japanese Style Sauce ~ 日式和風醬煎豆腐

Ingredient: 

  • 250g Tofu (firm will be better to fry)
  • 1 sheet of Nori, cut into strips to wrap tofu

For the Japanese sauce:

  • 1 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Rice Vinegar
  • 2 tsp Tamari or Soy Sauce
  • 1 1/2 tbsp Mirin  (optional)
  • 1 tsp Brown sugar
  • 1 tsp Maple syrup
  • 1/2 – 1 tsp Lemon juice
  • 1/8 tsp Pink Sea Salt
  • 1 tsp Mustard Sauce  (optional, it will be nicer if added)
  • 1 tsp Sesame oil
  • 1 tsp Onion puree or finely chopped onion  (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp Garlic puree  (optional)
  • 1 tsp Toasted White Sesame seeds

Method:

  1. Rinse the tofu under water. Drain and dry it with a towel. Cut into a rectangle stick-like shape, the size is up to you.
  2. Cut the sheet of nori into little narrow stripes, long enough to wrap around the middle of each tofu stick. Wrap a piece of nori around the middle of the tofu sticks.
  3. Mix all the sauce ingredients in another bowl.
  4. Preheat the frying pan with 1 tbsp of oil. Add the prepared tofu and fry until golden brown. Flip over and fry all the sides to golden.
  5. Pour 1/2 of the Japanese sauce in with the fried tofu, cook until the tofu absorbs half of the sauce. Remove the tofu on a serving plate.
  6. Pour the remaining sauce into the pan and cook over medium high heat, let it cook until the sauce thickens.
  7. Pour the thickened sauce over the tofu. Then serve hot.

Note: 

  • You can adjust the taste of the sauce after you mix all up.
  • Keep an eye on the cooking sauce during the last step, it is so quick to get burn. Mine got a little bit burn at the end. Can you find out? But the taste was so good!
